6 Misconceptions of Being Goth

Being goth can mean many things although there are many misunderstandings that have twisted what being goth is all about.

1. Age Limit For Dressing Goth

There is no age limit to wearing goth. All ages are always welcome to appreciate the look and aesthetic. If you think about it most of the first goths are from the 1970s meaning they are in their 60s or 70s now!

2. Goths Can Only Wear Black

A lot of goths do like wearing black but that isn’t the only color allowed. Many goths dress in other dark colors like purple or Burgundy. Some even wear Pink! There is no wrong way of dressing goth. Being goth means you have space for creativity and self-expression. You also understand and appreciate the dark side of life.

3. Goths Only Listen to Heavy Metal

Listening to one genre of music doesn’t necessarily make you goth. While many goths do enjoy metal, rock, and post-punk it’s not a prerequisite to being goth. Music is another way to express yourself and it can be different from the way you dress. Music taste doesn’t have to match your look. Any music is allowed to be goth.

4. Goths have to be Depressed

Many Goths in reality are very happy. They find contentment in expressing themselves with goth attire. Being goth is how they live their life to the fullest. They’re the happiest when they’re able to dress as they please. Although they might become depressed if forced to dress outside their comfort zone…

5. Introverted and Antisocial

There wouldn’t be goth clubs or events if goths were antisocial! Dressing in goth attire creates communities for goths to freely express themselves. They can find common ground with others through the way they dress. This common interest creates relationships with people from many different backgrounds. Dressing Goth doesn’t mean being antisocial, it can be the bridge in creating connections with a wide variety of people.

6. Devil Worshippers

Goths are not devil worshippers. There are some who do worship the devil but it’s not necessary to be goth. The goth community includes people with many different beliefs. Some people are atheists, Christians, Jewish, etc. The community doesn’t discriminate against any religion or belief. You can believe whatever you want and still be considered goth.

Each Goth Is Unique

There are no rules to being goth. All goths are similar, not identical. Each individual brings forth their understanding of what goth means to them. As long as you appreciate the dark aesthetic you can create and interpret your look however you like.
